Aleph

Groups: Dissertori

The ALEPH experiment has been one of the four multi-purpose detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider. The main purpose was the exploration of the Standard Model of particle physics, as well as the search for new particles/interactions.

h1

H1-Experiment at DESY

Groups: Eichler, Grab

The H1 collaboration has operated the H1 detector, one of the big experiments taking data with colliding positron-proton beams at the particle collider HERA (Hadron Electron Ring Anlage), located at the DESY laboratory (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in Hamburg.

icarus

ICARUS

Groups: Rubbia

The ICARUS (Imaging Cosmic And Rare Underground Signals) project is an experiment to measure very rare neutrino reactions, and especially to investigate the so called neutrino oscillations, at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) near Rome, Italy.

l3

L3 experiment at CERN-LEP

Groups: Hofer, Pauss

L3 was originated by physicists from ETH and from MIT, soon joined by 500 physicists from 40 institutions in Europe, the USA, Russia, India and China. Its design began in 1981 ans it took data from LEP strartup in 1989, till LEP shutdown, 12 years later.

l3+

L3+Cosmic experiment

Groups: Pauss

L3+C is a cosmic rays experiment initiated by an ETH physicist, which makes use of the L3 detector: the enormous size of the L3 magnet and the precision of its muon tracking insure that a high statistics, accurately measured sample of cosmic rays can be obtained.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of Some Kondo-Lattice Compounds: Microscopic and Macroscopic Studies

Groups: Schenck

By applying external and chemical pressure the physical properties of the Kondo-lattice systems Yb(Cu_{1-x}Ni_x)_2Si_2, YbCu_{5-x}Al_x and CeRh_2Si_2 were studied by different methods, in particular by using the method of muon spin rotation and relaxation (µSR) technique. The results are well accounted for by Doniach's phase diagram.

NOMAD

Groups: Rubbia

The NOMAD (Neutrino Oscillation MAgnetic Detector) project was a short baseline neutrino oscillation experiment performed at the CERN wide-band muon-neutrino beam. The goal was to search for the appearance of tau-neutrinos in the detector. The search was based on tau production by a charged current interaction of the tau-neutrino and the subsequent detection of the tau decay.

Polarized Muon Decay

Groups: Fetscher, Lang

The standard model introduces the V-A form of the charged leptonic weak interaction by construction. It has been shown recently that V-A follows from a set of precision experiments on muon decay. Thus the decay is characterized by left-handed particles.

SIAM

Groups: Dissertori, Viertel

The SIAM collaboration has as goal the development of high- granularity pixel detectors and/or low-noise photo-diodes, based on an emerging detector technology.

Study of Quadrupolar Ordering Phenomena by uSR Spectroscopy

Groups: Schenck

Quadrupolar ordering occurs in rare earth and actinids containing compounds in which the 4f and 5f-electron distributions are non-spherical and hence can be characterized by a quadrupole moment. The application of µSR-spectroscopy becomes possible since the quadrupolar ordering, or the presence of nonspherical charge distributions, respectively lead to...
